Thankfully, the series gets better as you progress, with the mysteries more interesting, the writing better, and the celebrities better too.
Yeah, remember The Funky Phantom? Anyone? This is one of the reasons why I think The New Scooby-Doo Movies was an hour long: to devote enough time both to the celebrity guest star as well as to the mystery (although again, there still was a lot of padding).Īlso the first half of the first season is HORRIBLE! Man, those episodes were so unengaging, disappointing, and just badly written that I almost quit watching the rest of the series! Many of them also featured fictional characters like Sherlock Holmes, Wonder Woman, Batman, and the crew of The Funky Phantom. The clue hunting and mystery solving takes a backseat in each episode and pretty much only serves as a MacGuffin. Since the main feature of this series is the celebrity guest star, much of the episode’s focus is on the celebrity guest star and spending time with them. However, there are some things I didn’t like about this series as well. I was even surprised by how good almost all the celebrity voice actors were! Even Macklemore and Liza Koshy surprised me! I mean, really, who approved these character designs?Īlso, the voice acting by all involved is top-notch as usual with Frank Welker voicing Fred and Scooby-Doo, Grey Griffin voicing Daphne, Kate Micucci voicing Velma, and Matthew Lillard voicing Shaggy. This show has great animation bringing the designs of the characters back to what we’re most familiar with compared to the animated series that ran prior to this show, Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! (2015-2018). Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? even features celebrities that younger crowds could care about more than I personally do such as Lizy Koshy, Gigi Hadid, and Macklemore. Unless they bring back Cher and Dick van Dyke. She’s the only guest star to appear in both shows and due to the fact that most all the other guest stars from The New Scooby-Doo Movies are dead, she’s likely to be the only one. Gosh, I miss him!Įven Sandy Duncan appears in an episode which pays tribute to her appearance in an episode of The New Scooby-Doo Movies that she did all those years ago. Alex Trebek even comments on this in his episode. Almost every episode, if not every episode, features the mystery-solving gang running chaotically from door to door with the celebrity guest star while evading the villain. It’s also interesting to see the modern era celebrities who appear as themselves in this series (sometimes they’re even the “villains”) including Mark Hamill, Whoopi Goldberg, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Penn and Teller, Morgan Freeman, Laila Ali, and my absolute favorite one, the late Alex Trebek. I really appreciate this as the hour-long episodes of The New Scooby-Doo Movies honestly dragged at times and contained a lot of filler.
Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? retains the celebrity guest star per episode aspect, but keeps each episode’s length to the usual half an hour. I don’t remember that episode particularly, but I’m sure it was better than the 2019 film!
There were also episodes where the gang was helped by animated fictional characters such as The Three Stooges, Batman and Robin, and The Addams Family. Some of those celebrities included Don Knotts, Don Adams, and Dick van Dyke. And two: each episode featured a celebrity guest star helping the Mystery, Inc. One: each episode was an hour long rather than half an hour. However, there were two distinct features. Like all Scooby-Doo media, that show featured a group of teenager: Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy solving mysteries with their Great Dane, Scooby-Doo. The formula for Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? pays tribute to the second Scooby-Doo television series, The New Scooby-Doo Movies (1972-1973). What do I think of it? Read on to find out! Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? is the thirteenth and most current television series in the Scooby-Doo franchise.
